What is Coaching?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the leading global organization for coaching. The ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential. At Alba, we believe that the ‘Coachee’ is the expert of their own lives and the coach’s role is to provide a safe, supportive, non-judgemental space which allows the process of coaching to unlock imagination, productivity and growth.
Is coaching for everyone?
In short, yes! However, to see the full benefits of coaching you must have a willingness or desire to want to make improvements in the specific aspects of your life. The coaching relationship creates a supportive yet challenging, non-judgemental environment to maximise the coachees potential.
The best results are achieved when the coachee is committed and has a desire to find change.
How does coaching differ to mentoring?
A mentor is an expert in their own field. Their role is to share their knowledge, skills and/or experience, to help another person develop and grow. This is often done in quite a directive, instructing way offering advice and suggestions.
A coach’s role is to support a person, by empowering them to discover and learn from themselves. This is often done in a non-directive way using questioning, raising awareness and reflection.
How does it work?
Starting with a free ‘chemistry’ meeting, we will get to know each other, we will explore the Dawn Coaching model, identify how it can be tailored to your unique circumstances.
The Dawn Coaching model is applied from the very first coaching session typically looking at a coaching wheel to gain a deeper understanding of your current circumstances, before working through the rest of the Dawn coaching model.
Each session typically lasts for approximately 60 minutes. During the session, you will be given the opportunity to talk about any specific aspects of your life you would like to develop. The coach is there to support and challenge you, to ensure you have considered different possible scenarios, often encouraging reflection. The coach isn’t there to make decisions or tell you what you should do, but rather to create a confidential safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Why the ICF?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the leading global organisation dedicated to advancing the coaching profession by setting high standards, providing independent certification and building a worldwide network of trained coaching professionals.
ICF offers the only globally recognised, independent credentialing program for coach practitioners. ICF Credentials are awarded to professional coaches who have met stringent education and experience requirements and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the coaching competencies that set the standard in the profession. Achieving credentials through ICF signifies a coach’s commitment to integrity, understanding and mastery of coaching skills, and dedication to clients.
How do I choose a coach?
Choosing the right coaching partnership is a huge factor in the success of the coaching journey. Because your coaching sessions can involve challenging and feeling vulnerable, it is important that you choose a coach who you feel comfortable talking to. This is why at Alba Coaching we offer a free chemistry session, to get a sense of whether we are a good match before we commit time to each other.
The DAWN Coaching Model
Everyone’s journey through life is different. The Dawn coaching model gives us a foundation from which to build our sessions upon, although allowing freedom/ flexibility within the process. This versatility enables the framework to be applied to many different situations within your personal and professional lives.
Discovery – Discover your dreams and desires connecting them to your purpose (why, what and how).
Awareness – Bring awareness to your current situation, including any limitations which may be preventing your progress or taking action.
Wonderings – Finding clarity in what needs to be done, giving you direction to attain your ambitions, acknowledging and overcoming any limitations.
Nourish – Nourish the desired outcome by giving energy and focus to your goals, recognise opportunities for success.
ICF Code of Ethics
The ICF Code of Ethics describes the core values of the International Coach Federation (ICF Core Values), and ethical principles and ethical standards of behaviour for all ICF Professionals (see definitions). Meeting these ICF ethical standards of behaviour is the first of the ICF core coaching competencies (ICF Core Competencies). That it “demonstrates ethical practice: understands and consistently applies coaching ethics and standards.”
The ICF Code of Ethics serves to uphold the integrity of ICF and the global coaching profession by:
- Setting standards of conduct consistent with ICF core values and ethical principles.
- Guiding ethical reflection, education, and decision-making.
- Adjudicating and preserving ICF coach standards through the ICF Ethical Conduct Review (ECR) process.
- Providing the basis for ICF ethics training in ICF-accredited programs.
The ICF Code of Ethics applies when ICF Professionals represent themselves as such, in any kind of coaching-related interaction. This is regardless of whether a coaching Relationship (see definitions) has been established. This Code articulates the ethical obligations of ICF Professionals who are acting in their different roles as coach, coach supervisor, mentor coach, trainer or student coach-in-training, or serving in an ICF Leadership role, as well as Support Personnel (see definitions).
Do you offer coaching packages?
We recommend a coaching programme of 6 to 8 sessions, to get the most out of the full coaching cycle. This enables the coaching relationship to grow and develop, identify clear goals for success and being able to break them down into more manageable chunks to be able to see progress and complete the sessions with sustainable changes which enable further progress beyond the sessions.
Typically, each session is 1 to 4 weeks apart depending on the type of goals you have, to allow time to see how changes are taking effect and to be able to build on this success. Each session will reflect on what has been achieved and any discoveries, before looking forward and breaking down the next goal into clear, meaningful, bite size chunks.
If, however, you have a specific goal or challenge for which you feel coaching would benefit you, we can arrange for a bespoke package upon request. This can be discussed during our chemistry meeting.
